"But the Lord replied to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered and anxious about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part [that which is to her advantage], which will not be taken away from her' - Luke 10:41-42

We all have our vices. That thing or habit that can stir us away from the right path. For some it's thier phone, social media, gaming or gambling. For others it could be addiction to pornography, drugs, tv series. For some others it could even be thier work or personal pursuits. "insert here all of the rest". Just earlier today, after hosting some guests. I had left my phone in the living area, whilst I went into the bedroom to tidy up a few things. I was there for a bit, much longer than I had planned. You won't believe the sheer amount of "thinking & reflecting" I was doing in there. My head space was so clear. I ended up having conversations here and there with the Lord on quite a number of issues and things in my life. It was so refreshing. The reason I loved it, was because it was spontaneous and unplanned. That moment inspired this post.

Believe it or not, we live at a time where so many things grab for our attention. There is too much information in the street. Varying opinions and as the world continues to develop and evolve, there would be more new things yelling and screaming to be explored. Therefore, there has to be some kind of intentionality by which we engage our world, preserving this precious mind God gave us. Preserving our thoughts; rebooting and making room for the information that matters. Do you practice solitude?

You see, Martha welcomed Jesus into her home, but it was Mary who sat at Jesus's feet. Scripture says that "Mary continually sat at Jesus's feet listening to his teaching" verse 39.  But Martha was very busy and distracted with all her serving responsibilities. What Martha was doing, wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Afterall she was being responsible. Who will make dinner and do the dishes?  but on the other hand she was mad, that Jesus won't tell her sister Mary to come help her and to do her own part. Jesus the saviour of the world was in the room, but Martha was anxious, worried and bothered about so many things. "But the Lord replied to her, "Martha, you are worried and bothered and anxious about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part [that which is to her advantage], which will not be taken from her." - Luke 10:41. Priorities....

In my line of work, I am privileged to work with web developers. Whenever there's been new update made to a website, they'll remind me to remember to clear cache so I can see the update made. The reason for this is because sometimes the page is cached. Your web browsers stores copies of web pages you've visited recently to reduce it's bandwidth usage or load. So when new updates are made, you may not immediately see it, until you've cleared cache [you are welcome :)]. In the same way, we can store up outdated information. We can be carrying irrelevant stuff around when we don't practice solitude. When we don't practice the habit of continually sitting at the feet of Jesus. Martha forgot to clear her cache. Her intense serving may have been relevant the day before Jesus showed up at her house, but she didn't know how to turn it off, even when the Saviour of the world was in the room. You and I are like Martha sometimes. We get our priorities mashed up. This is why it is important to practice rest. This is why it is  Important to practice solitude.

"Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" - John 14:6

I want to encourage you to rest, to practice the habit of sitting still. fasting from your phone or any of your vices that then lead you to a path where you begin to self condemn. Sometimes you might need a break from social media, do it. Other times before bed or even in the morning, sit still for five minutes, shutting your eyes, reflecting on your day. Other times don't take your phone with you to the bathroom :)  But learn to put everything away, clearing your mind space; so that you can get in tune; connecting to the ONE that truly  matters.

Have you cleared your cache today?

Love

Shay!

  1. "....we live at a time where so many things grab for our attention. There is too much information in the street." ....this is so true and would only increase, not decrease. Yes, and thank God, I'm at that place where I can easily sign-off my social media platforms (Twitter, FB and Instagram) for days and up to a month without feeling like I'm missing out on anything. May God help us to prioritize what things are more important to the journey and the purpose HE has called us to. Thanks Shay for sharing, God bless you.
